SEO Tips - Keywords Research

August 5, 2008 · Filed Under SEO Tips

I’ve already spoken about the importance of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and why we should take it more seriously than ever. From here on in this SEO Tips series, I’ll discuss the in-depth strategy of optimizing your site and what you should do to make your site perform better on search engines.

Today’s SEO Tips is about researching and finding the right Keyword(s).

We all know how important it is to have your keywords right. No matter whether your website is a week or a few years old, keyword(s) is the key. Keyword(s) is the driver of SEO. I just can’t put enough emphasis on the importance of using right keywords on the right place. At the end of the day it’s all about using your keywords property and smartly, isn’t it? I said “Properly and Smartly”. Don’t get me wrong, don’t misuse them. Google is smart enough to figure out whether you’re spamming or not. And if you’re caught doing that then your site may get banned and all your effort goes into water. Anyway, some of you may know it already, so let’s go back and see how we can start off with the keywords.

As understood first of all you’ve to choose the right set of keywords and only way you can do that is by doing a proper keyword research. There are many different ways you can do the keyword research to find the most suitable one’s for your business. You can use Google’s Keyword Research Tool or Wordtracker’s Keyword Suggestin Tool. There’re so many others you can use but I don’t think we need to explore all those at this stage. The best thing about Wordtracker is that it gives you the number of searches per day for a particular keyword or any combination of that keyword. But I would suggest using both, because Wordtracker doesn’t give you Google results. So you need to know the exact search terms by using your keyword in Google and then use them in Wordtracker to see the numbers.

So say you sell watches and you want to optimize your site for that. You can’t just optimize your site for watches, because if you’ve just come to the market then you know how competitive that keyword is. So you need to find out other combination of that keyword to find a deeper but niche market that is less competitive but relates to your products. In short you have to narrow it down. So go to Google and put watches and find the keyword phrases that relate to your business and put those keyword phrases into Wordtracker and see the number of daily searches made for those keywords. Whatever number you find here, you can always multiply that by 5 and get a rough idea of how many times those keywords have been searched in Google.  There’s no fix set of rules but this is something I do to get a rough idea because as you may know Google doesn’t release the number. Anyway, collect the number of keywords you’ve found here and then sort them by priority from highest to lowest. The next thing you’ll do is divide the keywords into two different sets, Primary and Secondary keywords.
