Cuil - Google Killer or Just another Cuil (cool) kid in the block?!?
A new Search Engine named Cuil (pronounced Cool) has gone live today with 120 billion (121,617,892,992 web pages to be more specific) indexed web pages, which is triple the amount of Google and Ten times more than Microsoft. So what’s so special about this search engine that got people talking about it? We’ve seen many search engines come and go. Is there anything special about this new search engine that may give search technology an all new direction? Well, not many people trend to think so. If you’ve started thinking it as Google rival then you’re not wrong but you’re not right either. You’re not wrong because Cuil is the brainchild of former Google architect and technical lead Anna Patterson. Anna was the architect of Google’s large search index, TeraGoogle and the technical lead of one of the two Web ranking groups at Google. So you see, the trend of making change is there. But would it be the Google “Killer”? Tech world don’t seem to think so. And as long as Google is concerned, they don’t seem to be worried at all.
“We welcome competition that stimulates innovation and provides users with more choice”, said Google Australia spokesman Rob Shilkin.
So, how does Cuil perform search and find the most relevant content? Seems like Cuil doesn’t totally believe in popularity, it’s the relevancy that matters to them.
“Popularity is useful, but has dominated search results so heavily that it gets harder and harder to find the page you want, especially if your search is a complex one. Cuil respects popular pages and recognizes that for many simple searches, popularity is an easy answer to your question. But for a deeper search, establishing relevancy is more than a numbers game. Cuil prefers to find all the pages with your keyword or phrase and then analyze the rest of the content on those pages. During this analysis we discover that your keywords have different meanings in different contexts. Once we’ve established the context of the pages, we’re in a much better position to help you in your search.” - Quotes from Cuil website.
But is it really how it works, totally on relevancy? When searched for Cuil.com, it didn’t even display it’s own site. Searched by Cuil, still nowhere to be found (not at least on first couple of pages). What’s more relevant than the exact URL. I guess we’ve to wait to find out.
Good to see that the new functionality like search refinement and suggestion in tabular format have been introduced. But again, question remains on the accuracy of these refinements. Couldn’t work out how Google Employees relate to the keyword SEO. Anyway, we’ll see how it travels alongside the giants. We’re expecting something new, something really good, something that provides us with more accurate results. Hopefully Cuil will not disappoint us like many others which couldn’t make their stand after the first good impression.
Finally back to the post heading; will Cuil be the google killer? I personally think it may give Yahoo and Microsoft a run for the money but Google? No, I don’t think so.
